Questions for healthcare appointments

Preparing a few notes can help you make the most of limited appointment time.

Before you go

  • Dates of your last few periods and typical bleeding length
  • Symptoms, when they happen and how they affect work, sleep or relationships
  • Medicines, contraception and supplements you take
  • Relevant family history (for example, early menopause, thyroid disease, clotting disorders, breast cancer)

Questions you could ask

  1. What could be causing these symptoms?
  2. Which tests, if any, would help — and what will they tell us?
  3. What are my treatment options, including non-medication approaches?
  4. What are the benefits, risks and side effects of each option for me?
  5. Which symptoms should prompt me to come back sooner?
  6. Would a referral to a specialist (gynaecologist, endocrinologist, menopause clinic) be helpful?
  7. Where can I find reliable information to read afterwards?
